history in the making?
Wednesday, November 05, 2008
Results for the US President election is filtering out right now. Current projections seem to indicate history will be in the making, with the first ever African-American President in more than 200 years of American nationhood. Democrats also appeared to have control over the Congress -both the Senate and House of Representatives. This will make Obama, if elected, a powerful president to push through his policies of "Change". Americans had clearly given their mandate to the Democrats, in the hope the party will be able to turn the economy around. I guess the Republican party is now suffering from the eight-year reign of the Bush administration, which saw two wars and the worst recession since the Great Depression.
What does all this mean for Asia, and particularly South-east Asia and Singapore? Well, let us hope the Obama administration will see greater attention being placed on SEA. After all, Obama spent a part of his life in this region. However, with the Democrats in power, I wonder whether we will suffer economically. Democrats are after all more inclined towards protectionism, which will hurt an open economy like Singapore. The Democrats will really have to work hard in reviving the US economy, or they may face a backlash in the next presidential or congressional election. It will be a interesting four-year ahead.
